The Standard Grade Physical Education course enables pupils to take part in a range of physical activities. It aims to help them to understand the principles involved and through practical experience to learn to apply these principles to a variety of activities.

The course also encourages pupils to make and accept decisions and to take on responsibility. Although not formally assessed, sportsmanship is central to the development of attitudes in the course.

At Golspie High School the course consists of Athletics, Badminton, Football, Basketball, Gymnastics, Indoor Hockey, Swimming and Lifesaving. The whole course is linked by a Thematic Study which looks at how the body works and by practical investigation relates the different components of fitness to the activities in the Course and also other sports. There are follow up courses that can be taken in S5 and S6 after Standard Grade Physical Education.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is based on three elements as follows: Practical Performance; Knowledge & Understanding; Evaluating.

Practical Performance is assessed by the teacher with assessment standards checked by the SQA.

Knowledge & Understanding is assessed by a written examination set and marked by the SQA. Evaluating is assessed by a written examination, set and marked by the SQA, based on a video presentation.

Question papers are offered at three levels: Foundation, General and Credit. Pupils normally attempt the questions at the two levels best suited to their ability as shown in class. Some pupils may be advised to attempt the questions at Foundation Level only
